A slim crystal bud vase my grandmother bought and then had hand engraved by a local Sydney artist in 1998. It's a genuine one of one, made for her and never repeated.
The engraving climbs the full height of the vase in a loose trail of blooms, leaves and seed heads. It's cut by hand, so you can see the texture of the work up close, with fine stippling in the petals and small variations that a machine would never leave behind. Against light it glows. On a shelf it reads almost like a drawing in frost.
The base is thick and heavy, so it sits steady with a single stem or a few sprigs. It looks just as good empty.
Signed and dated 1998 by the artist. The name is hard to make out, which feels fitting for something this personal.
