A beautiful antique Japanese bronze okimono from the Meiji period, depicting a geisha or travelling street singer playing a shamisen.
The figure is finely cast and stands in traditional dress with layered robes, sandals, and a small pack at the back. The shamisen is carefully detailed, and the modelling of the face and drapery reflects the naturalistic style popular in late 19th century Japanese export bronzes during the height of Japonisme.
The sculpture has a dark, even patina with subtle surface variation consistent with age. At 1.21 kg, the casting is substantial for its scale, giving the piece a pleasing solidity and presence.
